The motif of Scala collection, the topography of the south coast of Sicily called Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks)

The design is in fact inspired by an extraordinary topography of the south coast of Sicily called Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks) and its peculiar stepped white cliffs into the Mediterranean Sea. The same layered construction has been adopted to design a series of products to create the Scala collection. Ancient Roman architecture with its repetitive arch patterns has been used to design the Scala trays and plant propagator.

Just like real time has been taking off parts of the ancient Roman architectures, the Scala trays recreate these missing parts to give that historical sentiment to the objects.

With its strong visual narrative, the Scala collection gives the opportunity to have practical everyday objects holding that sense of heritage merging the functionality of each product to its architectural artifact aesthetic.

Each product is carefully handcrafted with Jesmonite in the Extra & Ordinary studio in London. The products are casted using a series of pigments mixed by hand to replicate the aesthetic of real stones such as white Carrara, green, and peach marbles. The pigment hand mixing process combined with the weight and the stone touch of the materials offers the Scala collection products true uniqueness and lifelong lasting value.
